Rome Continues Collecting Conservative Anglicans · May 21, 2012

June 15, 2012 will mark the launch of the third ordinate for Anglican churches seeking union with Rome. The ordinariate provides a Catholic diocese in Australia just for Anglican churches or groups of churches to join the Catholic Church while keeping many of their Anglican traditions and married priests.

The ordinariates are a new type of canonical structure authorized by Pope Benedict XVI in his apostolic constitution “Anglicanorum Coetibus” in 2009. Two other ordinariates have been established in the United Kingdom (January 2011) and the United States (January 2012).

“I am confident that those former Anglicans who have made a journey in faith that has led them to the Catholic Church will find a ready welcome,” Archbishop David Hart, of Melbourne said.

The Anglican Church has been gradually drawn closer to Rome since the time of John Henry Newman, when he and other colleagues undermined Anglican theology. But the Anglican Church has also become very liberal causing wholesale splits when it began ordaining female priests, bishops and later openly gay and lesbian bishops.

Benedict surprised Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams when he released “Anglicanorum Coetibus” without first notifying Williams.

The ordinariates provide a brilliant strategy for disenchanted, conservative Anglican communions (churches, groups of churches, and individuals) to join the Catholic Church. Rome is cherry-picking the conservatives from the Anglican Church by accommodating them and making it easy for them to retain their Anglican heritage and traditions.
