Killer floods bring tide of destruction in Canada and India



DEVASTATING floods in Canada have killed three people and driven more than 100,000 from their homes, while hundreds have drowned after monsoon rains in India.

The mountain resorts of Canmore and Banff in western Canada were left isolated after floodwaters wrecked the Trans-Canada Highway.

In Canmore, where homes were swept away, resident Wade Graham said: “I watched a refrigerator go by. I watched a shed go by. I watched couches go by. It’s insane.”

Calgary city centre was evacuated after both of the city’s rivers, the Bow and the Elbow, overflowed.

Water rushed through the streets, washing away bridges and cutting electricity supplies. Military helicopters scrambled to ­rescue people from rooftops. Royal Mounted Police said two bodies had been recovered.

The floods came after a rainy week in Alberta province was capped by a 4ins downpour.

In northern India, flash floods and ­landslides caused by early ­monsoons killed 560 people. Thousands ­more were missing after their homes toppled into the swollen River Ganges.

Rescue operations involving air force helicopters have plucked ­survivors from the foothills of the Himalayas. So far this week 33,000 people have been rescued.
