he Delaware Department of Correction has confirmed a hostage situation is underway at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna.

DOC Response Teams and Delaware State Police are responding to the situation, according to DOC spokesperson Jayme Gravell.

While Gravell would not provide any additional details, Geoff Klopp, president of the Correctional Officers Association of Delaware, told WBOC media partner the Delaware State News, "We’re hearing that three to five correctional officers have been taken hostage and the inmates have control of the building."

Vaughn, located at 1181 Paddock Road, was placed on lockdown status as firefighters responded to a reported structure-related incident on Wednesday morning.

Smyrna's Citizens’ Hose Company received a call at 10:55 a.m. and proceeded to the facility at 1181 Paddock Road.
