Beets are one of those vegetables you can eat raw or cooked. Surprisingly, most people don’t enjoy the powerful health benefits of beets. They contain numerous nutrients, including iron, copper, magnesium, potassium and B vitamins.
Here are things that will happen to your body if you eat beets regularly.
Risk of heart disease may reduce
Beets contain betaine and folate (a B vitamin), these two lower risk of heart disease and prevent damage of arteries. They do this by reducing blood levels of homocysteine.
Your blood pressure will improve
Beets contain nitrates which turn to nitric acid in the body. Nitric acid relaxes and expands blood vessels. This consequently lowers blood pressure. One study found that subjects blood pressure levels by up to 5 points after drinking a glass of beet juice for a few days.
Another study also found that beets reduce blood pressure and reduce blood clotting a few hours after consuming them.
More stamina
Beets are rich in nitrates, and research shows that nitrates boost athletic performance. In this study, cyclists who drank beet juice paddled 15 percent longer that those who didn’t. Note that you need to take 3-5 beets to boost your performance.
Better brain function
The fact that beets expand blood vessels improves flow of blood to the brain. And this can greatly benefit older folks. A study on older folks (mean age of 74), those who ate high-nitrate foods (including beets) experienced increased flow of blood to the frontal lobe. This led to better focus and concentration.
Cleanse the liver
Beets contain betaine, a compound that prevents and reduces accumulation of fat in the liver, research says. Studies also show that beets help detoxify the body.
Better ability to fight chronic diseases
Beets have strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties because they contain betalains. This means they can lower risk of diseases like cancer, obesity, and heart disease. In fact, research shows they can lower risk of breast cancer.
