Our livers have to work harder today than they did a few decades ago, due to all the toxins in our foods and the environment. So there’s a high chance your liver has become overworked and weak.

A sluggish liver can cause fatigue, asthma, sugar cravings, depression, high blood pressure, hormonal disorders and many other health problems.

Luckily, the liver can actually regenerate itself by simply changing eating habits. Here are 10 ways to improve liver function and overall health.

1. Don’t eat additives

Research shows that, triclosan, a commonly used antimicrobial additive increases risk of liver tumor. Other additives have also been found to ruin liver tissue and affect liver function. You simply need to avoid processed foods, food colors and preservatives.

2. Use herbs

Herbs like turmeric, black root, artichoke, boldo, blue flag, and dandelion root can strengthen your liver. Turmeric is the best option since it has many other benefits.

3. Eat foods rich in Lecithin

This is a compound that enables the liver to lower cholesterol and metabolize fats. It’s found in organic pastured eggs, soy milk, and tofu. You can also use lecithin supplements.

4. Reduce sugar intake

The harmful effects of sugar have been discussed over and over – too much sugar weakens the liver.

5. Get enough vitamin C

Vitamin C helps maintain a healthy liver, get it from your whole foods or supplementation.

6. Reduce meal sizes

Large meals overwork the liver, thus making it sluggish. Small meals are easier to digest and absorb. You don’t necessarily have to lower food intake, just break down big meals into small ones.

7. Eat foods rich in Sulphur

Studies show that Sulphur helps cleanse and protect the liver. Broccoli, onions, and garlic are some of the foods rich in Sulphur. Note that low sulphur levels can lead to accumulation of toxins in the body.

8. Avoid margarine and vegetable oil

These fats force the liver to work harder, so avoid any foods that contain them.

9. Take a multivitamin

A quality multivitamin can help prevent deficiencies that lower liver function.

10. Eat more fruits and veggies

Fruits and veggies are rich in minerals and vitamins which help the liver function properly. Try eat veggies in every meal, and at least one fruit a day.
