Do you exercise regularly, maintain a calorie deficit, but still not losing weight? Well, it’s not your fault. This study shows that it was easier to lose weight 30 years ago than it is today. This means that a 35-year woman living in the 80s is likely to be lighter than today’s 35-year woman using the same workout regimen and diet. If you’re struggling to maintain a healthy weight, you need to be aware of the other factors that determine weight loss.

Here are 7 reasons people are fatter now than 30 years ago.

Increased use antidepressants

According to this study the use of antidepressants in people older than 12 years has increased by 400 percent from 1988 – 2008. And the numbers are definitely way higher by now. Unfortunately, most antidepressants (including SSRI) have negative side effects. In fact, experts say that 25 percent of people who use antidepressants are likely to gain 10 pounds or more.

Exposure to chemicals

Chemicals in our foods, water, containers, food bags, beauty products, furniture and so on, can cause weight gain. For instance, BPA, a chemical found in plastics messes hormones and can cause weight gain. Here are other chemicals that may affect your hormones and weight.

Poor gut health

The microorganisms in the gut have changed over the last 30 years. And as you may know, gut bacteria affects weight gain and obesity. The foods we eat have largely contributed to poor gut health. Processed foods, steroids, artificial sweeteners and so on are to blame for this.

Stress and high cortisol levels

Various studies show that stress causes weight gain. And high cortisol levels aren’t good for weight loss either. The worst thing is that cortisol and stress have the ‘egg and chicken effect’, when you’re stressed the body produces more cortisol and high cortisol levels increase stress.

Slower metabolism

All the factors mentioned above aren’t doing your metabolism any good. Most people nowadays have slower metabolism due to exposure to chemicals, poor gut health and stress.

Lack of quality sleep

Research shows that it’s easier to maintain a healthy weight if you get enough sleep. Unfortunately, people aren’t getting enough quality sleep as they used. Always make sure you get 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night, and keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.

Change in professions

White collar jobs have reduced level of physical activity by a huge percentage. 30 years ago folks would burn lots of calories lifting things up and walking around. Research shows that the average person’s total calorie expenditure has reduced by 100 calories.
