Motiva Oil Plant Evacuated After Explosion, "Significant Fire" In Louisianna

The Motiva plant in Convent has been evacuated after an explosion and fire Thursday around 11 a.m.

The oil refinery is located on Highway 44 near the Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish.

EMS said there have been no 911 calls reporting injuries. Medical staff were staging at a nearby truck stop to respond.

Firefighters were responding to what was called a "significant fire" at the scene. According to St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel, the fire was located near the plant's heavy oil unit. Roussel said that the fire is contained and authorities are vigorously working to extinguish it. Roussel says that all of the employees have been evacuated and are accounted for.
