GLENN BECK, A MORMON, WONDERS AFTER..........
Prophetic Intelligence Briefings BY: Pastor Hal Mayer
Glenn Beck, a Mormon, Wonders After… · February 23, 2012
Commentator Glenn Beck, a Mormon, went to Rome to visit prominent Roman Catholic cardinals, monsignors, archbishops and others to discuss religious freedom. Beck “pledged support for the church,” which is battling the Obama Administration over conscience clauses in the law requiring religious institutions to provide contraceptives for their employees. He also discussed how members of various faith communities can join in solidarity with Rome against secular attacks on religion.
Beck also met with Tea Party leaders from various European countries to discuss an international coalition to be run by “FreedomWorks, an organization, led by former U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Dick Armey and others. The coalition would like to develop an “integrated global effort to champion Tea Party ideals.” Glenn Beck has tried to connect to religious conservatives by championing this cause among other things.
As the political controversy between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration continues to intensify, Beck also announced the launch of the “we’re all Catholic’s now movement” to protect religious liberty and to support the Roman Catholic Church in its efforts to defends it stance.
“I am a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but today, I call myself a Catholic,” wrote Glenn Beck in the Washington Post. “Why? Because the state is telling the Catholic Church to violate its principles and teachings. So if you are a person of faith, you must call yourself a Catholic.”
Beck went on to misrepresent history. “Today, the Catholic Church is defending a historic America freedom. We tend to forget that many of America’s earliest European settlers were religious refugees. Europe was not a kind place to the faithful if the state didn’t approve: Jews in Spain, Puritans in England, Protestants in France and so on. You were cast out, or worse.”
The truth is that Europe was not kind to those whom the Church did not approve. The church in the middle ages controlled the state. And it was the church that wasn’t kind to heretics. Beck is distorting the real truth concerning the history of medieval Europe, but obviously doesn’t want to point out that the real offender was the very church for which he is pledging support.
Beck went on to say, “The state needs to be free from the church, and the church from the state.” Either Glenn Beck doesn’t understand the Catholic Church, or he is inconsistent in his statements. The Catholic Church accepts money from the government for various institutions, yet claims religious freedom from state requirements. The Catholic Church also lobbies freely in the U.S. Congress and at other levels of government to push her agenda and influence in legislative halls. While Beck’s pronouncements of solidarity with Rome sound good to many, he needs a little education concerning their real purpose. It is the Catholic Church that wants to mix church and state and through it control the state ultimately just as in medieval times.
Needless to say, Beck is trying to use ecumenical methods to promote the Roman Catholic social agenda. Most people don’t realize that closer ties will lead to Rome’s ultimate religious supremacy.
The meetings in Rome are part of a series of meetings that Beck has been having with various evangelical faith leaders, rabbis, and others. Obviously, Glenn Beck and the Tea Party are working to move the United States and other nations toward a more outwardly religious political environment.
Pushing global religious and conservative initiatives also fits with Rome’s agenda in the name of religious liberty. Eventually, these organizations will join together to promote more overtly religious laws.
“We are not battling for the next election, we’re battling for the very soul of each of us and of our nation,” Beck recently said on television. Glenn Beck’s message is very similar to that of the Catholic Church against modern secularism.
Meeting with the Catholic Church leaders in Rome would almost certainly boost his profile and support from Roman Catholics. Beck has also recently met with some of the “most prominent evangelical leaders in America — Billy Graham, Dr. James Dobson, John Hagee and James Robison…” as well as prominent Jewish rabbis.
“And this is the religion which Protestants are beginning to look upon with so much favor, and which will eventually be united with Protestantism. This union will not, however, be effected by a change in Catholicism; for Rome never changes. She claims infallibility. It is Protestantism that will change.” Review and Herald, June 1, 1886
