Herpes is a virus that manifests itself as several small red blisters filled with fluid. Blisters can appear on the lips, genitals, mouth or even near the eyes and are often painful or itchy. Since herpes is a virus, modern medicine can’t cure it as the treatment is mainly based upon pain management; most people suffering from herpes are told to take pain medications during outbreaks. While pain medicine may mitigate pain, long-term exposure can damage your body. Before taking pain medicine, consider trying the following home remedies to relieve herpes pain and itchiness:
Olive oil
Olive oil relieves blisters by moisturizing the skin and providing antioxidants. When mixed with lavender oil and beeswax and heated, olive oil relieves from pain and itchiness. Just make sure to let the mixture cool before applying it!
Baking soda
Baking soda relieves pain by drying out herpes blisters. In order to use baking soda to sooth pain, apply it lightly to the affected area with a cotton ball. Make sure that you don’t re-use a cotton ball or you risk cross-contamination.
Lemon balm
Lemon balm contains several ingredients that help heal herpes blisters. Unlike many other treatment options, lemon balm treats herpes through both physical contact and digestion. Treat physical symptoms by making lemon balm tea and applying it directly to sores using a cotton ball. Just like when you apply baking soda, be careful not to re-use the cotton ball.
In addition to this treatment, adding 2-3 ml of lemon balm tincture to water and drinking it three times a day helps relieve pain and itchiness.
Black tea
Black tea contains high amounts of tannin, which reduces inflammation and is a natural anti-viral. It’s also an easy-to-use remedy for herpes; simply make a cup of black tea, let it cool, then apply the teabag to the affected area for about five minutes. Do this three times a day to get the most out of your treatment.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera is often used to relieve pain associated with sunburns, but it can also treat pain resulting from herpes. You can either apply a pure aloe vera gel to the sores or apply the contents of a fresh aloe vera leaf to the affected area. Both will relieve pain and may even help reduce inflammation.
Epsom salt
Since you have to soak in a warm bath for epsom salt to work, it’s an effective and relaxing remedy. Much like baking soda, epsom salt dries out blisters and reduces pain and itchiness. Just make sure to take a shower after treatment to avoid skin irritation.
Black coffee
Chances are you already drink coffee, so this should be an easy remedy to incorporate into your daily schedule when herpes blisters manifest in your lips or mouth. Simply drink a slightly cooled cup of black coffee to help with the pain. It’s especially soothing if you hold the coffee in your mouth for a bit.
