Why Swimming Could Change Your Fitness Life

Swimming is one of the most dynamic workouts that there is available to many people. Most people know a swimmer and having one of the swimmer bodies is a dream for many males while females look at the flat stomachs of female swimmers with envy. Most people do not think of swimming as the main component of their weight loss journey. The following will show the reasons that swimming can and should be supplemented into your workout routine. There are many people who use swimming as the main component of their fitness routine and you will be able to see why.
Low Impact
There are a few problems with using running or biking as a form of cardio. After hours and hours of cardio you seem to have to run more and more to attain the same type of workout. This can lead to overuse injuries quickly if the runner or biker is not careful. Swimming is a very low impact type of exercise and the workouts that are used can be switched up very easily. Swimming offers the muscle confusion that many people look for as there are 4 strokes and each of these strokes target different muscle groups. Interval training is the best thing to control your heartrate or to step up a workout. All one has to do is lower the interval and a seemingly easy set turns into a challenging set very quickly. You can just take off 5 seconds per interval and you will see your heartrate skyrocket.
It Uses Oxygen Deprivation
If you are an experienced swimmer then you know how to control your heartrate using oxygen deprivation. This can be done by reducing the amount of breaths that you are taking per lap. Even if you are going the same speed and touch at the same time, breathing less will help your heartrate skyrocket without doing anything else. Controlling your heartrate during this oxygen deprivation is an advanced technique but it can be applied to other forms of cardio as well. The less and less a swimmer breaths the more lactic acid builds up and lactic acid tolerance is something that is strived for whether it be a high school swimmer or Olympic athlete.
You Don’t Always Have To Swim
Underwater running is something that can be used to help people who have had injuries and cannot run on land. This involved grabbing a dumbbell or something heavy and just running on the bottom of the pool. This boosts your heartrate as you cannot breathe and this contributes to you feeling the burn by the end of your run. This is also great if you suffer from back or knee maladies as water is used in many rehabilitation programs after injury. Above water running or water aerobics can also help you to lose weight and tone up your body.
As you can see there are many things that can be done in the pool that will help you become fitter than you ever thought was possible. Making sure to try and use great technique is important as this will make you more efficient in the pool thus making it possible to step your workouts up even more. You have probably heard of the Michael Phelps diet, while it probably isn’t realistic to eat this much for a regular person and maintain abs it definitely shows how great of a workout that swimming can be.
