ALABAMA, KENTUCKY CALL FOR SECESSION FROM U.S.; "SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IS NOT CONSTITUTIONAL" Same-s10

By: Amanda Scriven

A month has yet to pass since SCOTUS ruled in favor of Obergefell v. Hodges, declaring same-sex marriage a constitutional right for all states in the US.  Alabama and Kentucky have already submitted plans to separate from the nation, calling for secession based on their strict opposition to gay marriage.

Alabama, who shut down marriage licensing offices state-wide following the declaration, has recently compared gay marriage to the Holocaust; Chief Justice Roy Moore saying that he is expected to “follow the highest authority” and be “ordered to”, or forced to, uphold a law he does not agree with. Apparently it has not occurred to Moore that the Holocaust was about mass genocide and murder, and that gay marriage is about love; though many Americans do synonymize marriage with death, same-sex or not.

Kentucky, more recently, has preferred to outright deny same-sex couples their marriage licenses, while continuing to issue licenses to “traditional” opposite gendered couples. Governor Steve Beshear presented one County Clerk with an ultimatum; allow for all licenses or resign. The ultimatum, of course, is obviously just a cover to buy the Governor some time to plan his succession strategy.

Neither state has been quiet about the fact that they feel as though the premise of same-sex marriage is not constitutional. Officials in both states are now facing legal trouble for refusing to lift their gay marriage bans; some have had police called on them for failing to do so, while others are facing hefty lawsuits.

Other known homophobic U.S. states have been surprisingly quiescent; North Dakota, Arkansas, and Ohio are within the top five most homophobic in the nation and are expected to follow Alabama and Kentucky into succession. South Carolina, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Michigan also fall on the most homophobic spectrum in America, though sources do not believe they will show interest to succeed.

Is gay marriage the worst thing that can happen to the United States? More than half of the U.S. States, thirty six out of the fifty two, had passed same sex marriage rights previous to the SCOTUS ruling. Apparently Kentucky and Alabama think so despite some other questionable laws they’ve consented to.

In Kentucky, a woman can be arrested if she purchases a hat for her husband without his permission. Can a man in Kentucky purchase one for his husband legally, well, providing he can obtain a marriage license first? In Alabama, however, incest is legal. One can marry their own brother in the great state of Alabama, of course, as long as they are not also a man.
