Former US vice president Dick Cheney has defended the use of torture by the Central Intelligence Agency ahead of the release of a new Senate report on the agency’s controversial program.

In a phone interview with the New York Times on Monday, he said the program was “the right thing to do, and if I had to do it over again, I would do it."

“When we had that program in place, we kept the country safe from any more mass casualty attacks, which was our objective," Cheney said.

He made the remarks after the White House announced that a summary of the report would be released on Tuesday.

Under the administration of former president George W. Bush, the CIA used harsh “interrogation techniques” against the suspected terrorists following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The report is set to criticize the program and accuse the CIA of misleading American lawmakers about the value of the practices in obtaining information.

Cheney also noted that the reported conclusion by the Senate Intelligence Committee that the agency misled the White House “is just a crock.”

“They deserve a lot of praise,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, they ought to be decorated, not criticized.”

He also said the program was authorized and the CIA did not want to proceed without authorization, and it was also reviewed legally by the Justice Department before they undertook the program.

Cheney called the techniques "absolutely, totally justified."

For those American citizens that actually listens to his rantings, their intellgence rates a -2 on a scale of 10, with zero equaling = the proven idiot level. Rabid dogs like this poor excuse for a human, need to be put down. How is this sack of waste is still alive after a dozen heart attacks? Wait, he hasn't got a heart, only humans have hearts. This fool is such an embarassment to American ideals because he believes in, NONE of THEM!

During Nixon and Bush Jr.Administrations ,there was a cadre of closeted gay males who enjoyed inflicting sexual sadistic tortures on other men and filming it and to watch later at men-only parties. Several names of extremely important men were mentioned some of whom were defense contractors for whom Bacha Bazi parties were given in Afghanistan and Iraq. Others were politicians of several countries. This should have been told but everyone was too afraid.

HmmmWell then since he is such a staunch supporter I suggest that he be "picked up" and publicly on live TV be subjected to torture to find out exactly what his role in 9-11 and its after math really was. You know just to be sure. In fact we could start with water boarding which according to Cheney isn't torture at all. That way he can't complain about his rights being violated. Come to think of it there are about 2 dozen people that must receive the same treatment. Virtually all of them neocons and most of them just by some strange coincidence also happen to be dual citizen Israelis. I believe a few public minutes with this group and the American people would refocus their anger and their attention at the root cause to the horrors of the last 13 13 years, Israel.

Mr. Smith, you're absolutely right; you nailed it perfectly. Cheney is, indeed, a totally deranged, arrogant torturer and mass murderer who belongs either in a padded cell wrapped in a straight jacket, or in solitary confinement in some maximum security prison somewhere out in the desert. Either of these two options would be worse than swinging from a tree or lamp post in the District of Criminals; in that, for the rest of his life, he'd have to contemplate all the felonies he has committed since the 1960's. Maybe, that's what caused him to lose all reason and moderation; after all, it's no fun being reminded by whatever atom of conscience he may have of all of these crimes.

lol, if the need to protect one countries is paramount. Then every nation should have the right to nuclear weapons, military weapons and aggressive policies. International laws and treaties are created so government do not go overboard with rights or cause issues. As an intelligence tactic, torture serves little purpose. You could probably get as much info by getting someone drunk. Torture's another tool for humans to inflict pain and degradation upon each other. The problem for the US and it's allies is the range of grievances the rest of the world has against them. Revenge for all their misdeeds is more likely.

On 9/11 Cheney the Chickenhawk did, indeed, order NORAD to stand down from the WH, while his puppet - Dumbya - read a children's story book to a class of first and second graders at a Pensacola, FL primary school.If another major war erupts, just put him and his fellow Chickenhawks aboard a transport plane, each with a parachute and a rifle, and drop them right behind enemy lines. Now, that would be the most justifiable punishment they could receive before meeting their Creator.
