E. coli Pestilence in Europe · July 12, 2011

“Health officials in Germany have confirmed that they have detected the first case of human-to-human spread of the deadly strain of the E. coli bacterium that has claimed the lives of almost 40 people.” This is the world’s largest outbreak of the disease.

In one case, a kitchen worker near Frankfurt became infected with E. coli from eating sprouts and then passed it on to 20 people that she prepared food for.

This particular strain of E. coli is more deadly because it mutated by combining two characteristics from two separate strains of E-coli. When combined they stick to the gut and cause serious hemorrhage. The first cases appeared at the beginning of May and then swelled to a crisis level over the next three weeks around Hamburg, Germany.
So far there have been 39 deaths and more than 3600 people sick from the strain. The strain had even been found in a stream in Frankfurt.

Another strain is in France. Seven children in the north of France were sickened by hamburger patties. Ten tons of frozen beef patties produced in France have been recalled, but research has not been able to link the bacteria strain to the one in Germany. Two more people who ate the beef patties have apparently gotten sick from them as well.

The French strain causes hemorrhaging in the bowel and causes severe diarrhea. Sometimes the bleeding is so bad that blood transfusions are necessary. In others it causes renal failure requiring dialysis.

The German E. coli strain has spread to 12 countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Britain and the United States, but it appears that the cases involve people who have recently travelled in Germany.

The German E. coli strain has several characteristics that make it more virulent and toxin-producing. It is very similar to one particular strain found in Central Africa. But it has also acquired “specific sequences” of DNA that make it even more dangerous. The strain can cause abdominal cramps, fever and bloody diarrhea and can affect the blood and kidneys. It can also cause seizure, stroke or coma and chronic kidney problems.

Apparently, the two traits combined could explain why a large number of the infected people developed a deadly kidney disorder, said Hugh Pennington, a bacteriology professor at the University of Aberdeen. “It’s really moved into a new kind of era for these kinds of organisms,” Pennington said in a telephone interview. “Let’s hope we won’t see it again, but it’s too early to tell.”

It is also hard to treat the symptoms with drugs because normal anti-biotics actually cause the E. coli to produce more toxins.

Jesus said that in the last days there would be pestilence. While this is relatively limited in its consequences, it can easily be seen that someday a deadly “superbug” could mutate and spread its lethal toxins globally.
