DAHBOO 77 - NEW EVACUATIONS, FLOOD WATERS THREATEN TO BREACH LEVEES AS SOUTHERN FLOODS PERSIST

Officials in the Arkansas town of Pocahontas urged at least 150 homes to evacuate Monday due to fears that the rising Black River would overtop a levee and flood a large swath of the city.

The evacuations were ordered for the east side of the town of about 6,500 located in northeastern Arkansas, according to KAIT-TV. Mayor Kary Story told reporters all of those under evacuation orders were expected to be out by 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, and shelters were opened to house the evacuees.

At least 16 people were killed and dozens more injured when severe storms brought flooding, tornadoes and dangerously high winds to Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas over the weekend. Several of the dead are children, two of which are still missing in Arkansas after being swept away by floodwaters.
