Cleveland firefighters received bulletproof vests they first asked for more than a year ago.

They received 100 vests Thursday, more than two weeks ahead of the Republican National Convention; but Firefighters Local 93 President Tim Corcoran said they are too little, and too late.

"We've been trying to get those vests since March 2015 and we're just now getting them," Corcoran said. "Yes, the RNC is important, but that's only five days. I'm more worried about the other 360 days of the year.

"I'm happy we have the vests, but I'm not not pleased with the response," Corcoran said.

There are normally 150 firefighters on the city streets. That number will jump to 250 from July 18-21 during the RNC, and 100 vests are not enough, Corcoran said.

The city purchased the vests with part of a $50 million National Special Security Event grant it received, and those funds can only be used for RNC-related items, city spokesman Daniel Ball said.
