6 Foods Americans Eat Which Are Banned In Other Countries

By admin on March 3, 2015

1) Milk and Dairy Products Which Contain rBGH
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is the largest selling dairy animal drug in America. rBGH is a synthetic version of natural bovine somatotropin (BST), a natural hormone produced by cow’s pituitary glands. The company Monsanto developed the recombinant version from genetically engineered E. coli bacteria and markets it under the brand name “Posilac.” It’s injected into cows to increase milk production, but it is banned in at least 30 other nations because of its dangers to human health, which include an increased risk for colorectal, prostate and breast cancer. Non-organic dairy farms frequently have rBGH-injected cows that suffer approximately 16 different adverse health conditions, including very high rates of mastitis that contaminate milk with antibiotics. Despite decades of evidence about the dangers of rBGH, the FDA still maintains it’s safe for human consumption and ignores scientific evidence to the contrary. In 1999, the United Nations Safety Agency ruled unanimously not to endorse milk or dairy products which contain rBGH. The only way to avoid rBGH is to look for products labeled as “rBGH-free” or “No rBGH.”
Where It’s Banned: European Union, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada

2) Meat Treated With Ractopamine
The drug ractopamine, which is used to promote protein synthesis in livestock to make them more muscular. This reduces the overall fat content of the meat. Ractopamine is currently used in about 45 percent of US pigs, 30 percent of Americas cattle, and an unknown amount of turkeys are injected with ractopamine in the days leading up to slaughter and shipment to supermarkets. Studies have shown that up to 20 percent of ractopamine remains in the meat you buy from the supermarket. In 2013, Russia issued a ban on US meat imports to last until the US agrees to certify that the meat is ractopamine-free. The U.S does not even test for the presence of the drug in meat which is sold to Americans. Its effects on animals are linked to reductions in reproductive function, increase of mastitis in dairy herds, and increased death and disability. Ractopamine is also known to produce harmful effects on the human cardiovascular system, hyperactivity, and may cause DNA abnormalities and behavioral changes.
Where It’s Banned: Over 160 countries including Europe, China and Russia.

3) Chicken Containing Arsenic
Arsenic-based drugs are approved for use in the US because animals grow quicker and make the meat appear fresher. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated these products are safe because they contain organic arsenic, which is less toxic than the inorganic form, which is a well known carcinogen. Several independent scientific studies have revealed that organic arsenic could transform into inorganic arsenic which have been found in elevated levels in supermarket chickens.
In 2011, Pfizer stated they would stop marketing its arsenic-based additive Roxarsone because of the potentially harmful effects on human health, but there are still several other companies on the market taking advantage of the FDA’s lack of action.

4) Farmed Raised Salmon

The health benefits of wild salmon are common knowledge these days but what about farm raised salmon? Wild salmon gets its pinkish-red color and health benefits from its natural diet in the wild. Farmed salmon, on the other hand, are raised on an unnatural diet of GRAINS! This diet leaves the fish with an unnatural gray flesh so they feed synthetic astaxanthin made from petrochemicals, which has not been approved for human consumption and has well known toxicities. The farmed raised salmon are also given antibiotics and other chemicals which have been shown to have harmful effects on the human body.
Where It’s Banned: Australia and New Zealand

5) Brominated Vegetable Oil
Mountain Dew, citrus-flavored sodas and sports drinks have a synthetic chemical called brominated vegetable oil (BVO), which was originally patented by companies as a flame retardant! Bromine is a central nervous system depressant and is part of the halide family which is a group that includes fluorine, chlorine and iodine. Once ingested, Bromine accumulates in the body and can lead to iodine deficiency, which can have detrimental impacts on your health. Signs and symptoms of Bromine toxicity include skin rashes, loss of appetite, fatigue, and cardiac arrhythmias.
Where It’s Banned: Europe and Japan

6) Chicken Washed With Chlorine
The European Union long ago placed a ban on chicken that has been washed in chlorine. Since many U.S chicken farms raise thousands of chickens in a very small confined space they become infected with their own feces and many other harmful bacteria. Many US companies including Tyson Chicken use chlorinated water as an antimicrobial treatment because of those conditions. Some chickens are “water chilled,” which means they are submerged in a chlorine bath. Others are “air-chilled” which means they use misted chlorine to clean.
