Expensive tastes: Leila Ben Ali, the wife of Tunisia's ousted president, loved fast cars

The wife of Tunisia’s ousted president fled the chaos-stricken country with one-and-a-half tons of gold worth more than £35million, it emerged yesterday.

Dubbed ‘the Imelda Marcos of the Arab world’ because of her lavish lifestyle and love of designer clothes, Leila Trabelsi is said to have demanded the gold last week as President Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali’s regime collapsed.

The chief of Tunisia’s central bank initially refused but Ben Ali, 74, personally intervened, and she flew out with the bullion as she joined him in exile in Saudi Arabia.

The source of the claim, leading Tunisian economist Moncef Cheikhrouhou, said militia men had tried to take more gold.

The clan of the former first lady is widely despised as the ultimate symbol of corruption and excess.

A former hairdresser, Mrs Ben Ali, 53, is known for her love of fast cars – the family had more than 50 – luxury homes and frequent shopping trips to Dubai, during which she is said to have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds.

While many Tunisians faced unemployment, poor living conditions and oppression from Ben Ali’s brutal regime, his family – known as ‘The Mafia’ in the North African country’s capital Tunis – is said to have amassed a £3.5billion fortune. Much of it is kept in France, where some members of the family were still holed up last night.

The former president’s pregnant 24-year-old daughter Nesrine and her playboy husband Sakhr were taking cover in a series of suites in Disneyland Paris, together with a huge retinue of servants and bodyguards.

Dubbed the Tunisian Marie Antoinette, she used to fly luxury foods, including ice cream from St Tropez, to her beachside mansion by private jet while her husband kept a pet tiger, which he fed prime cuts of beef.

Nesrine and her sister Cyrine are expected to be expelled soon from Paris, a French minister said yesterday as France, Tunisia’s former colonial rulers, considered freezing any assets linked to Ben Ali’s regime.

‘They (Mrs Ben Ali’s family) are thieves, tricksters and even killers,’ raged Tunis resident Mantasser Ben Mabrouk. ‘Their only goal was to make money in whatever way they could.’ WIFE OF TUNISIAN PRESIDENT FLED RIOT-TORN COUNTRY WITH 1.5 TONNES OF GOLD (THAT SHOULD HELP FEED THE SON-IN-LAW'S PET TIGER) Articl17

Tunisia’s prime minister Mohammed Ghannouchi yesterday announced a national unity government, allowing opposition into the country’s leadership for the first time.

It was unclear last night whether the shake-up – which allowed Mr Ghannouchi, a long-time ally of Ben Ali, to retain his post along with several top ministers – would quell public fury.

Ex-presidential security chief Ali Seriati and his deputy were charged with a plot against state security, aggressive acts and ‘provoking disorder, murder and pillaging’, the TAP state news agency reported.

The current crisis in Tunisia began after the death of a vegetable trader who set himself on fire in anger at state restrictions on his ability to earn a living.

He became a martyr to crowds protesting against poor living conditions, following exposure of the ruling regime’s corruption via the WikiLeaks website.

Yesterday officials said copycat protests were spreading across North Africa as five more men frustrated by soaring prices, poverty, high unemployment and oppressive regimes set themselves ablaze.

One man suffered light burns in the Egyptian capital Cairo, while in Algeria four men set fire to themselves in different towns. One was reported to have died although this was denied by the government.

Anger and terror was growing last night among 1,500 Britons left to their fate in revolution-torn Tunisia.

Angry confrontation: A demonstrator argues with a policeman in Tunis. There were other protests in cities around the country yesterday

With gun battles raging, an army curfew in place and machete-wielding mobs roaming the streets, they pleaded for more flights to take them home.

Among them were holidaymakers who were actually flown into the North African country by British Airways on Friday, when the violence was at its height and the Foreign Office was warning Britons to leave.

They included two groups of four who found themselves the only guests in their hotels as bullets flew outside.

One woman stranded in Hammamet said: ‘Before we left we called British Airways and said, “We have just seen there has been rioting in Tunisia, is it safe?” and they said it was no problem and not to worry.’
